Frequently asked questions

  • For those of you who have not experienced hypnotherapy, it's nothing like stage hypnosis (in other words, you won't leave my office quacking like a duck or clucking like a chicken - or if you do, it will have nothing to do with our session together!). It's more like a focused dream in which your logical mind is switched off for a while, allowing your subconscious (the really powerful part) to make real and lasting changes to the way you live.

We all go into trance many times every day. It’s a naturally occurring event. If you drive and have ever had one of those “Wow, I’m here already, what happened to the last ten minutes?” experiences, then you’ll know what I mean.

The role of the hypnotherapist is to enable the client (you) to relax so that your brainwaves enter what is called ‘the alpha bandwidth’. Within this bandwidth, you are able to embrace change in a way that is not possible when using the logical, analytical part of the brain.

In many ways, what I do is to help you reconnect with the real you; the part of you that is loving, trusting, and non-judgmental; the part that knows you are a good person, and knows that you have all the resources within you to make all the changes you desire.

  • This is a common question, and the answer is that I cannot forecast an exact time frame. It all depends on what changes you are looking to make. Insomnia can often be successfully addressed in as few as 3 sessions. Stopping smoking might be one session. Losing several stones in weight will take longer, not least because that is the only way to do so healthily according to BMA guidelines.

  • No, you remain fully in control throughout the session. Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation, not unconsciousness, and you cannot be made to do anything against your will.

  • Hypnotherapy can address a wide range of concerns, I specialise in treating anxiety, insomnia, stress, phobias (fear of flying etc), stop-smoking, pain, weight loss, tinnitus, menopause, public speaking, exam nerves and sports performance. If there is something specific you would like to discuss, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

  • Yes, hypnotherapy is a safe and natural process when conducted by a qualified professional, it is non-invasive and drug-free.

  • A session typically begins with a discussion of your goals, followed by guided relaxation to enter a hypnotic state. In this state, positive suggestions and techniques are used to help you achieve your desired outcomes.

  • It’s impossible to get “stuck” in hypnosis. You can return to full awareness at any time, either on your own or with guidance from the hypnotherapist.

  • Most people can be hypnotised if they are willing and open to the process. It’s a natural state of relaxation that we all experience daily, like daydreaming.
