Self Mastery

“The greatest thing in life is to know how to be oneself.”
Michel de Montaigne.

In today’s frenetic world life belts past at an ever-increasing speed and there are always more distractions in front of us.  The era of technology is a wonderful time to be alive, but it is also one that brings with it more and more stimulation, more and more distractions.  It’s harder and harder to have a clear mind.

To be master of oneself is to know who you are: the real you that resides inside that perfect vehicle for experiencing all you need to experience, your body.

That requires clarity.

One thing is for sure: clarity can be difficult to find amongst the hurly burly of today’s world, and it will be harder to find if when you get in from a hard day’s work you take a meal from the deep freeze and heat it in the microwave, pour yourself a large vodka and sit down to watch four hours of television!

We are all clear when we are born.  We all have the ability to see behind the masks that people wear, because we have not yet adopted one our selves.  As we grow older we copy what others do.  We see them hiding behind the hologram of the mod-con world and we do the same.  We hide our light, because the people around us hide theirs and we don’t want to stick out from the crowd.  But the light is still there, shining inside us with the spark of perfect self-expression: all we have to do is recognise it.

Things are changing.  I have talked for fifteen years about the Quickening of human consciousness and we are seeing this around us every day.  The Quickening is, quite simply, the time when the Human Race shifts to become the Human Grace, when the heart regains its place in pole position and logic is returned to its rightful place as an also-ran.

The Quickening is here and now and even in the act of reading these words you are adding to its momentum.

The world is a feeling world and your ability to access yourself can be measured by your ability to recognise the light you were born with, rather than accepting the “you” that society and education has created.  That recognition will be one of opening up your heart to love your self – not in an egocentric way, but in a way that honours your uniqueness as well as your connection with all other living things.

In loving your self you open up the way to love others.

In honouring your own life you honour all others.

As you will know if you have read any more of my website, I see our world as a mirror reflecting back what we think into it and more importantly what we feel.  The really fun part is when you know and feel that you are the mirror as well as the person reflected in it…when you recognise that we are all part of the same mirror, the same interweaving web of connectedness.  When you see this, you understand that by showing compassion to yourself you show it to others, and the world needs compassion more than ever now.

To be compassionate to yourself you need to know who you are, to look your self in the eye (literally) and see who is there behind the mask.  You need to be able to take the next breath knowing that your self is the unshakeable, beautiful spirit with which you were born.

Take a look in the mirror.  Hold your gaze.  Keep on holding it: I guarantee you will like what you see there.

So many of us are taught to dislike trivial things about ourselves.  Maybe it’s our weight, our hair colour, or maybe our personality…Like the person in a restaurant who has just finished their dessert and sees another one being delivered to someone at another table, we are taught to say “I wish mine was like that!”  We’re taught to envy what other people have – when the truth is that we all have everything we need already.

The universe brings you messages each and every moment of each day: it’s up to you to listen to them and to understand them, and to do that you must understand yourself.  Forget the hype, the commercials, the sales pitches: your pathway to personal fulfilment and peace is not to be found inside a can of fizzy drink or a bottle of whisky, and your true contentment will not come from a tube of skin cream or a slimming pill.

That’s because your light is within you already, right now, waiting for you to take a look and say, “Wow, it was here all the time!”  It’s waiting there for you, calm and patient.  It’s the light that shines on your perfect self-expression.  All you need to do is to decide you want to see it.

To take your first steps to self-mastery try to stop rushing, even if just for a moment each day, and check in with the real you.
